In this week’s parshah, Hashem tells Moshe to gather 70 zikainim, 70 elders, to help him lead the Jews. Why 70? There is a deeper significance to this number.
How many Jewish concepts can you think of that have to do with the number 70? We are taught that the 70 elders were representative of:
- The 70 Jews who went down to Egypt
- The 70 nations of the world
- The 70 names of Hashem
- The 70 names of the Jews
- The 70 names of Jerusalem
This is just one example that shows us that nothing in Judaism is random!
